For years Sandwell Liberal Democrats have been calling for action to be taken against speeding on various roads around Sandwell. On some roads we have been successful in having speed checks undertaken, and securing commitments for investigations in to lower speed limits, but more needs to be done to tackle this issue in Oldbury and Smethwick.
There have been numerous crashes at accident blackspots along the Wolverhampton Road, with the Queensway/ Brandhall Road/ Wolverhampton Road, Bleakhouse Road/ Wolverhampton Road, and Causeway Green Road / Wolverhampton Road junctions being particularly notorious. Sadly, several of these accidents have proved to be fatal.
On the evening of Saturday 15th January a car lost control on a bend on Hagley Road West, crashing into a lamppost and bursting into flames. Unfortunately, two people died as a result.
Speeding is something which is flagged to us as an issue on most roads in Oldbury and Smethwick including, but not limited to;
- Hagley Road
- Wolverhampton Road
- Brandhall Road
- Dog Kennel Lane
- Hagley Road West
Urgent action needs to be taken.
We are asking Sandwell Council to undertake a comprehensive investigation into speeding across Oldbury and Smethwick and measures to tackle this. This includes exploring the rollout of average speed cameras across the area, implementation of 20mph speed limits, or else properly consulting local residents about their preferred method of traffic calming on the worst streets and implementing this.
We are also asking West Midlands Police to increase the number of speed checks on Sandwell roads to deter excessive speeding.
