Sandwell Lib Dems welcome promise of action to protect our local waterways
Local Conservative MPs voted IN FAVOUR of water companies dumping in rivers
The Liberal Democrats are leading the fight to protect our waterways here in Sandwell from pollution.
Local Lib Dem Daisy Shone said: “Rivers should be safe for swimming, fishing and sustaining wildlife. Yet sadly, many are a dumping ground for water companies - and are contaminated with raw sewage and and other waste.
"I hope our Conservative MPs will see sense and protect our rivers when the vote comes back to Parliament. next month.”
But Conservative MPs - including the West Bromwich East and West Bromwich West’s MPs - blocked earlier plans to stop water companies from dumping in local rivers.
In Parliament, Lib Dem MPs have been pressing for more action to protect local waterways - and ban water companies from dumping raw sewage. These proposals were voted down by the Conservatives, only for the Government to make a U-turn and say they will make changes to the Environment Bill, but with no clear plan for doing so.
Sandwell Lib Dems Chair, Mark Smith, added: “It is outrageous that Conservative MPs have betrayed our local community and environment in this way. There are 23 storm overflows that release sewage in Sandwell, and they were doing so for 6,700 hours last year.
“Their job should be to stand up for our local area. Our rivers are being polluted on a daily basis by water companies, showing a complete disregard for our environment.”
